CBD FOR YOUR DOG

CBD has been shown to aid in the treatment of arthritis in dogs. CBD is an effective treatment because all mammals have the endocannabinoid system, and, as we have stated before in this blog, CBD reacts with this system to help it reach homeostasis, or balance. The CBD reacts with the CB1 and CB2 receptors, which are all over the body, humans and dogs. The interaction of CBD with these receptors, gives your dog pain relief as well as help in reducing the inflammation. This study was performed to test CBD on dogs with pain from arthritis. Eighty percent of the dogs showed improvement in their pain and mobility, as measured by two veterinary resources — the canine brief pain inventory and the Hudson activity scale.

CBD AND SEIZURES

From a story on the Science Daily web page:

Promising and exciting. Those are the words used by Dr. Stephanie McGrath to describe findings from a pilot study to assess the use of cannabidiol, or CBD, for dogs with epilepsy.

McGrath, a neurologist at Colorado State University’s James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital, led a small study with 16 pet dogs to assess the short-term effect of CBD on seizure frequency.

Based on her research, McGrath found that 89 percent of dogs who received CBD in the clinical trial had a reduction in the frequency of seizures. Nine dogs were treated with CBD, while seven in a control group were treated with a placebo.

“It’s really exciting that perhaps we can start looking at CBD in the future as an alternative to existing anticonvulsive drugs,” Doctor McGrath stated.

A LOCAL STORY OF SUCCESS TREATING CANINE ARTHRITIS

“I wanted to try CBD products for two reasons. 1. I have a 15-year-old Border Collie with painful arthritis. 2. I suffer from chronic insomnia. I had read that CBD products helped both conditions. I bought the CBD dog treats and could see a difference within 3 days. Now my dog’s quality of life has greatly improved.”

As a note, the CBD helped her insomnia as well.

IS CBD FOR YOU?

As CBD seems to be all over social media and national television shows, you may be wondering if CBD is for you. Will it help you with your ailment or condition? You may be curious about how it works, or if it works. You are not alone.

14% OF PEOPLE NATIONWIDE HAVE USED OR ARE USING CBD

That percentage is roughly 51 million people who are using or have used CBD. As more and more research projects are in the works, we are finding more ways in which CBD can help us. Yet, it has not hit mainstream America and has to contend with some of the negative press of its cousin, marijuana.

CBD IS LEGAL AND SAFE

The research on CBD has proven it safe for human use. And, it is legal in 48 states as of this writing. However, there are some cautions that can be given in purchasing CBD. First and foremost, is the Certificate of Analysis (COA) that must accompany any CBD product. The COA will give you the amount of CBD in the product, the other ingredients and also what is not in the product such as heavy metals, pesticides, and THC. THC, Tetrahydrocannabinol, is the ingredient in marijuana that makes you high and will show up on a drug test. Though there is not enough THC in any CBD product to make you high, always insure there is a COA for the product you intend to purchase in the event you will need to pass a drug test.

FIND THE RESEARCH

Veterinarians are not allowed to initiate the discussion of CBD with pet owners due to a provision in the law that prohibits them prescribing or initiating a conversation on a product that is not FDA approved. As a result, they cannot recommend CBD as a treatment.

MICHIGAN VETERINARIANS SEEK TO HAVE THE LAW CHANGED

Dr. Kellie Holmstrom, a Marquette veterinarian helped inspire the legislation. She explained that questions about CBD are asked on a daily occurrence but not being allowed to initiate the conversation about CBD limited her ability to offer informed medical advice to the pet owner.

IDAHO HAS THE SAME LAWS

Because Idaho has the same laws, veterinarians here are faced with the same predicament as those in Michigan. Regardless of the absence of the FDA approval, certainly a veterinarian should be allowed to discuss the use of CBD with a pet owner. This can certainly happen without the veterinarian writing a prescription, but merely stating the facts surrounding the use of CBD for pets.

AMPLE RESEARCH TO INDICATE THE USE OF CBD FOR PETS

There is enough evidence surrounding the use of CBD for pets to allow veterinarians to initiate the discussion of how it may help with a particular condition. The studies that have been conducted have shown promising results, especially for pain relief in dogs. Veterinarians need to have the freedom to offer CBD as an alternate treatment for pain in dogs. As mounting evidence continues, we will see that CBD will also be a help for cat owners as well.
