I’m sure the first question that comes to mind from that headline is, what is medication fog? An article in today’s Post Register told of a patient who was showing signs of worsening dementia with growing confusion.

A DOCTOR SUSPECTED SOMETHING DIFFERENT

Dr. Pei Chen suspected there may be more to the confusion than was caused by the patient’s dementia. The doctor asked the patient and her daughter to round up all the prescription medication. They brought in 28 drugs ordered by various doctors for a variety of ailments. Dr. Chen was able to reduce the amount of drugs the patient was taking and her confusion cleared. The doctor explained the patient’s symptoms were from a medication fog not her dementia.

WHAT COULD CAUSE THE MEDICATION FOG?

Many of the drugs the patient was taking had anticholinergic effects, that is, they reduce or interfere with a chemical messenger that’s key to healthy nerve functions. That can cause drowsiness, confusion, blurred vision, dizziness and other symptoms that impair thinking skills.

HOW CAN CBD HELP?

The list of medications the patient was taking included pain relievers, sleep aids, antidepressants, and anti-anxiety medications. As one who has read many of the other posts in this blog will know, CBD can help with all of these ailments and conditions and it has no side effects. The patient may have been able to use CBD instead of the prescription medications and could have possibly avoided the medication fog she experienced.  As always, we recommend that anyone thinking of replacing medication with CBD should talk to their physician before stopping any medication.
